The United States Air Force (USAF) is an Air Force component of the U.S. military and was established on September 8, 1947. Its mission is "to protect the United States and its interests through the use of force in the air and in space." The United States Air Force is the world's largest and most technologically advanced air force.
At the start of FY 2013, the United States Air Force had 510,900 personnel, including 332,800 active duty units of the Air Force, 71,400 reserve forces, 106,700 empty Chinese militias, and 185,500 civil servants.
As of September 30, 2006, the U.S. Air Force was equipped with approximately 160 drones and 4,282 manned aircraft (including 172 bomber fighters, 1,619 fighters, 160 helicopters, reconnaissance aircraft, early warning aircraft 137 and special operations aircraft 103 278 air tankers, 1,284 trainer aircraft and 529 transport aircraft), another 1,321 Air National Guard units, and 410 Air Force reservists; 2,161 space-based cruise missiles and 580 intercontinental ballistic missiles.
