FedEx was founded by former U.S. Marines Frederick W. Smith in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1971 but relocated to Memphis, Tenn., In 1973 because Little Rockets airport officials refused to provide the facility.
FedEx relocated to Tennessee to serve 25 cities but it was difficult and had a severe initial loss. However, business started to improve in a few years, and in July 1975 the company made its first profit. In 1978, FedEx officially listed.
In 2003, FedEx announced the acquisition of Kinko's, which ended in February 2004. Later, the test was renamed "FedEx Kinko's." In 2008, FedEx relinquished the brand "FedEx Kinko," changing its name to FedEx Office.
FedEx now serves 3 million daily customers in 210 cities, with major competitors including DHL, UPS and USPS, as well as TNT in The Netherlands. FedEx and DHL, UPS and TNT, the world's top four couriers.
April 7, 2015 FedEx buys 4.4 billion euros ($ 4.8 billion) (about 37 billion U.S. dollars) in cash of 8 euros per share to acquire TNT Express N.V. to expand its business in Europe.
